The following software versions (and all subsequent versions) provide native 64-bit support: The minimum driver versions required for use with the 64-bit kernel are: MOTU FireWire/USB2 audio interfaces, PCI-424 audio interfaces, and USB MIDI interfaces can be used with the 32- or 64-bit kernel. When using the 64-bit kernel in Mac OS X v10.6 and later, 64-bit hardware drivers must be used. Hardware Using the 64-bit kernel is not required to run 64-bit applications or plug-ins an Intel-based Mac with a 64-bit processor can run both 32- and 64-bit applications and plug-ins while using the 32-bit kernel. Mac OS X v10.6 supplies 32- and 64-bit kernels by default, the 32-bit kernel is used. (To see if your Mac has a 64-bit processor, please refer to the Apple support document, " How to tell if your Intel-based Mac has a 32-bit or 64-bit processor.")
